Soleri A Novel Michael Johnston 9780765386489 Books Reviews

I received an early copy of this novel in return for an honest review. I really really like this one. If you like the world of ancient Egypt (it doesn't say that outright, but you get the feeling pretty easily) then this is one for you. The world building in this novel is phenomenal. You switch between characters that are tied to one another, a family. The son was given over to the priory when he was only a small child, there to live a life far different than his sisters. He had to submit to the pain inflicted there and when he is able to come out, it is because his father, the king, is called to his own death. That's the only way you can leave the priory. You leave when your father dies. These boys are the sons of kings and Ren is finding out that once he is out, someone is after him and wants him dead.
Characters are as well done as the world building is. You get a flavor of Egypt and of times long past. The sun is worshipped and there is intrigue as well as warfare. Kepi and Merit, sisters to Ren, have lives that tie in with the history of Soleri very well. I like that you are given much of that history as you turn the pages and it adds to the understanding of current plots and actions.
Soleri is well worth the read. If you like action, a good storyline and a well done world that is easy to see in your mind, this is the one you want to pick up next. Will Ren become king? Will someone succeed in killing him? Will Kepi avoid a disastrous marriage? Will their mother, Sarra, the high priestess of the sun god cult, help or hinder? Pages will turn. Sleep may be lost. But you are going to want the answers.
Interesting, even though it didn't quite land for me. I got this as an ARC from Tor last month; that it took me until the book's release to finish it is probably a sign of something or other. Part of it's that I'm not in the target audience right now -- this is packed with action and intrigue as rulers (or would-be rulers) scrabble for power in a hollow empire, trying to shore up their places as the world crumbles around them. Overlooked daughters try to come into their own power, abandoned sons turn away from thrones that they've never known... and unfortunately, we bounce around just a _little_ too much for me to get attached to any of them. Secrets are hoarded, potential allies are turned away, and everyone is just grasping enough to let victories slip away from them. It's well written, and very page-turning when I was actually reading, but I also never felt very good about going back to it. I fully admit that this is just me; in another time and place, the bleakness and desperation might make me want to devour this to see who might ride the wave of collapse and come out on top, but for now, it's just not going to do it for me. Let the next book give me a triumphant queen beloved by her people, or a group of friends making good, and I might come back, but I don't want to just watch things fall apart.
Soleri is an epic fantasy that captures a touch of ancient Egyptian mythology and mixes it with the high drama of a Shakespearean tragedy by Michael Johnston.

One family has ruled the Soleri Empire for longer than the calendars have been recording the history - nearly 3,000 years. No one has seen this family, described as descended from the gods, but their power over the four kingdoms of the empire is iron tight.

Each year there is an eclipse and the kingdoms are meant to pay tribute and honor their god-like leaders, but this particular year, Arko Hark-Wadi - king of Harkana - does what he wants to do, which is go on a hunt. There is strife in his family as his daughters look to buck the long-standing traditions and marry the men they want to marry, and Arko Hark-Wadi's son Ren is held prisoner in the capital city.

Elsewhere, Sarra Amunet, he Mother Priestess of one of the gods' religions, holds some secrets that could destroy not only her family, but end the long reign of the empire if she's strong enough to reveal them.

There is a LOT here in this book. 368 pages feels like twice that, given the intricacies of the relationships and the world.

There were moments when I was completely engrossed in the characters and the developing story - particularly the beginning and the end (which is great since it captures our attention and it sends us off on a strong note) - but there were just as many times (throughout the middle) when I felt the story was repetitive and monotonous - making the 300+ plus number of pages feel twice as long, but not in a good way.

The opening chapters really had me hooked on Ren's story and anytime we weren't with him I really just wanted to get back to finding out what he was doing - which just wasn't enough!

While I wasn't overly thrilled with my reading of this book, I believe that there's much more in here that I missed and this is one of the rare books that I will make sure to read again in hopes that I can pick up more of the intricacies of the story.

Looking for a good book? Soleri by Michael Johnston is an epic fantasy, dense with character and story development that often feels much longer than it really is.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
