This story was a bit hard to read as we followed with the main character as she descends into a paranoid madness. Although we get an explanation and resolution at the end, I still kind of didn't believe the resolution and was waiting for that one last page to reveal that she really HAD lost it! That didn't happen tho, and overall this was a book I didn't want to quit reading but didn't enjoy a great deal either.Tags : Amazon.com: Inheritance eBook: Thomas Wymark: Kindle Store, ebook,Thomas Wymark,Inheritance,Thomas Wymark,Fiction Psychological,Fiction Thrillers Suspense
Inheritance eBook Thomas Wymark Reviews
I felt this book was extremely long winded as far as the 'symptoms' (don't want to spoil it for anyone) went. The middle section could have been thinned out because by that time we already knew what Chris was experiencing. There was no need for as many examples as there were - I feel anyway.
Aside from the wordiness, this was a captivating read. It raised as many questions, twists & turns as it answered. Definitely worth reading. A little speed reading & you'll be fine!
This book could have been half the size. The author repeats the symptoms the entire time throughout the book - any time there is a new character that hasn't been told her past, she feels the need to repeat all of the details, as if WE, the reader, hasn't been through all of them.
Believe me, I tried to find something to like in this book. But couldn't find it. Even given it is British writing and I expect it to be "different", the grammar is horrific. Over and over one sees such and such a character and ME did whatever. Another disconcerting thing is the repeated use of the phrase "at the moment." The story was so boring I found myself counting the use of this phrase. Vulgarities popped up for no reason. Wymark is big on details. And details. And details. Does he not have a copy reader? Even though this was a free book, reading it will cost you your time. In my case, I am sorry I stuck with it to the end—hoping all would come together and make for a decent read. It didn't happen.
I have to submit a review... And I usually don't unless I really enjoyed a book. This was a "freebie" for Prime members and thank goodness. I can count on one hand in my 41 years that i've EVER not finished a book. It's rare. Usually, if I pick a book, it's because it had some merit to make my list. I play it out, give it a chance, try and find what led it to be published. Sadly? I could not do that with this book. It was...agonizing. The premise led to the chance of success for a good narrative. I read voraciously and can and do finish books quickly. This book I read for days, looked down on my device and saw I was 18 percent through with it. And I could read no further. I read the synopses posted and I never even got to the point where she looks for her father or finds some secret or whatever. It was PAINFUL for the mind... ironic given it's about the mind. I simply wish my mind would have played tricks on me and given me the wherewithal to finish the book. I don't mean to sound harsh...Often authors read their reviews. I can only hope this author falls less in love with himself and his need to describe the same thing over and over like Groundhog day and decides to invest in his plot and make it move. Don't buy it, don't bother with it for free. Sadly it's not worth it.
I agree that the first half of the book was interesting, and I had high hopes. However ... First there's an incident, which is very well described. The character then tells her husband of the event in great detail. We relive the incident a couple more times through contemplation and a journal. Then the character tells her best friend, then the therapist, then her parents - with almost identical detail. Another incident occurs, and the entire process is begun all over again. I think the idea could have been written in half the number of words. I don't usually skip over pages, but this was tedious.
This is the third Thomas Wymark novel I've read; how he keeps upping the quality of his work, I don't know. The premise of this book is one I haven't seen in any other novel ... very suspenseful and intriguing. Mr. Wymark is a master at unexpected plot directions. READ THE BOOK!
A good story with an interesting plot. I enjoyed the read. But I'm picky about grammar, and was driven crazy by "XXXX and me discussed it at length," etc.Thomas Wymark, you're a good story teller, but PLEASE hire a copy editor! It would make so much difference to the quality of the finished book.
