This book is another exploration of the immortal vampire book variant. It features interesting takes such as instantaneous and repeated teleportation between parallel worlds; a new perspective on the mixing of witches, warlocks, and vampires; and a novel approach on how to weave animals into this type of plot. Moreover, there is plenty of backstabbing, double crossing, triple crossing and general misbehaviour that keeps you guessing and ensures the plot moves along at a good clip. However, that is not quite enough to make it rise above the countless other vampire offerings out there. I was looking for a little more edge and could not find it here.
I saw this on Books for free and decided I'd get it because it sounded interesting. But as its been a while that I have picked up my kindle, since I have so many unread books on my own shelf, I took a break and decided I'd read at least one of my many, many, books on my kindle. I'm glad I did pick this one up because I really enjoyed it. I don't know why I waited so long after downloading it to read. I read through it in a few sittings but I never wanted to put it down because it was so good. I had no idea that it was even about vampires, but I found it so interesting because it wasn't the usual story about vampire, there were aspects where the romance was there, the whole human likes vampires, sort of like Twilight, but I found this story to be a lot better. It wasn't just based on romance, but a mystery, a curse, deception, you find yourself at the edge of your seat to figure out what happens next. Trying to see who in fact we could and could not trust. Friends become foes, foes want to friends. I liked Evangeline, although she was a little too trusting, I felt for her, her longing for friendship and love. I really enjoyed how it ended and I'm excited to read the sequel and see what really happens to Evangeline.
This book had a pretty standard plot, and I felt like the beginning of the book moved WAY too fast and was unrealistic. BUT... It snagged me.

The love for Caden was... Your standard "see a vampire, fall in love instantly" combined with you "HE'S SO [standard "tall, athletic, and handsome" attractive description]" type of romance, but it was refreshingly countered by the more developed-over-a-long-term motherly love of Sophie, even if it wasn't professed until closer to the end.

The main character is... Well... Rather naive, as most of them are and the character development wasn't exactly realistic at some points, but it was there none-the-less and decent. She still retained some of her naivety, but by the end of the book she had at least matured in some VERY significant ways. She's a realistic 18 year old, at the very least, not written as if she was 16 or younger instead of her actual age. MUCH better than most authors manage to put into such a short, fast moving book.

And despite the book being very fast paced and the story line being sort of generic, there were some interesting plot twists and unique modification that I didn't see coming. It was well written, there was no childish language for the most part. All in all, it's a good example of what a short "mid-way" young adult book should be. Not quite mature, but not quite rainbows and butterflies, either. I liked that the book didn't have much of a happy ending, though there's more books to the series. It ended on a good note, I think.

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quick read between books, especially for the 15 and up crowd.

I've given up on reading vampire books after Twilight...or some other vampire YA (Vampire Academy) back in 2010. So it's been a long time since I've read this genre, but this book was refreshingly different, that I was drawn into the story. Even now, despite this not hitting any perfect book awards, I'm compelled to finish the series.

Evangeline is the naive 19-year-old protagonist who gets entangled with some filthy rich vampires. In this case a sorceress- vampire, Sofie was involved in a spell, that destroyed the vampire ability to turn humans into vampires. This caused a problem when 2 vampires that fall for the same human (Sofie's human sister), who they want to turn a vampire. Sofie sets of a spell that involves Evangeline traveling to another (possibly parallel) universe of Earth that is overrun of Vampires with the human race extinct.

I think this plot makes this worth a read, because I call this successful genre-blending. It's a vampire book but magic is the real reason the plot moves so well.

Evangeline meets 5 "good" vampires in the other world and falls in love with 1 of them. Personally, I felt like these characters, despite being quite important, had very little development. They were like the Cullen family from Twilight. Caden, the love interest was a typical YA hero, but apparent super hot and protective and selfless- so all is forgiven.

My favorite character is Sofie- I can't wait to read more about her. Evangeline is the cutesy naive type, which is not a bad character, but I've outgrown enjoying that type of protagonist. I'm also taken with the elderly butler, Leo, and the vampire millionaires, Mortimer and Viggo (this might be spoiler-y but the fact that they aren't the nice vampires hold my appeal. I want to know who gets the girl).

Overall, the writing was pretty good and so was the pacing. I like Evangeline so I hope she doesn't disappoint in the future. The story is really interesting and different - definitely worth a read.
I really enjoyed this book. The story had a lot of twists and turns along the way. The characters are one of a kind and work well together.
