Irish Thoroughbred Silhouette Romance #81 Nora Roberts 9780671574994 Books Reviews
Another marvelous Nora Roberts book consumed. Her trilogys are difficult to compare to by any other author. Looking forward to the next one.
Nora Roberts publishes really good books with well drawn characters, interesting plots, detailed settings and backgrounds --and romance and sex. Then she writes lightweight romances with limited characterizations, simple plots, minimal setting details. This is one of the latter genre. If they remind you of others written in past, it is because of that similarity. It is OK but I prefer the first type!
This was Nora Roberts first best seller. I had read it years ago but when they decided to release a hard cover version on the anniversary, I bought it for old times sake. It's an enjoyable story but she has grown 100 fold as a story teller over the years. If you are a Nora Roberts fan and somehow missed this book in your reading, it's a fun read and let's you see how far she has come.
Nora's more recent books are so hit and miss. This one is pretty bad. Neither member of the romantic couple has a personality beyond a temper. The man is little more than a molesting bully, yet he's handsome so she falls in love. Seriously? Nora has written some delightful books, but this seems to be something she just hammered out with little imagination or story.
I like to become familiar with popular novelists. This is my first Nora Roberts novel and also was the first novel published by Miss Roberts. It is a decent first effort. I felt it was a somewhat predictable romance novel. I would call it a "light read" that can easily be completed in a week or so.
I know Miss Roberts is very accomplished. I assume she evolved a good deal from this point as an author. I now intend to try to read one of her more mature and developed works. This is an OK novel and I wish to become familiar with Miss Roberts' work, but I would not reread this novel without a specific reason.
I'm horse crazy so it didn't take much for me to want to read this book and obviously I was biased to like it. But I was disappointed. From the beginning I thought the character of Adelia was overdrawn and the outcome with Travis entirely predictable. And pretty improbable. But even so, I enjoyed the horsey setting and the story moved along. But I was shocked that Adelia's employer repeatedly touched her inappropriately and even worse, kissed her every time she got mad. They were NOT in a romantic relationship; she was his employee and what Travis did, and repeatedly, was sexual harassment. And poor Adelia didn't seem to notice. I didn't check to see what was the publishing date of this first Nora Roberts; perhaps it was before sexual harassment in the workplace came to be viewed as a crime and perhaps that's why it was treated so nonchalantly. But I thought it was a terrible choice of a plot device.
The note says this was Nora Robert's first published book. Even this one was a page turner. I hadn't read this set before, but I love big long books and books in series that take a week to read, so I bought the whole series for my . And I couldn't stop until I had read the entire series. It never hurts that Nora loves Ireland and the Irish people, as I do. And she was writing about horses. I live in Lexington, and the pasture behind my house is often full of horses--so again Nora was speaking to my heart. As I suspected, from the first, Miss Roberts had a knack for creating wonderful, believable characters. I fell in love with sweet Dee immediately. But all that said, I must add that sweet Nora has gotten considerably better over the years. If you haven't read this set, by all means do. I am sure I will reread it again and again as I have most of her books.
No, it's not Roberts' best -- but IRISH THOROUGHBRED is still enjoyable, and very worthwhile for a look at the evolution of a writer! Check this one out back-to-back with its sequel, IRISH ROSE (written some 7 years later), and you'll see how much Roberts grew in that time. IRISH THOROUGHBRED's main character Adelia is a plucky girl, but IRISH ROSE's Erin is more of a grown woman. Then sit back, hold on to your hat, and read steamy IRISH REBEL, published in 2000. It gives us Adelia's daughter and the man she falls in love with, going head-to-head as equals and as lovers. Adelia develops as a stronger character in the subsequent books as well. The reviewer who appears below me (Wendy Meade) is right when she calls IRISH THOROUGHBRED conventional, but it WAS Roberts' first published book, and those WERE the conventions of romance novels when it was written. (Check out those Harlequins of the '70s!) We've come a long way, baby, and Roberts is one of those who helped contemporary romances get to where they are now. IRISH THOROUGHBRED also began Roberts' tradition of lovable Gaelic characters, especially Adelia's Uncle Paddy. The polish may not be there yet, but the warmth is, and that's what keeps us coming back for more of her books 20 years later!
Nora Roberts Novels never disappoint. A great, easy read. I loved the love story that developed between Dee and Travis. Can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
