Emerge The Awakening Volume 1 Melissa A Craven 9780990981992 Books

In Emerge: The Awakening, we meet Allie, a diminutive teenage girl with fiery red hair and a snarky attitude. She has been on the run, moving from place to place, her entire life, and she's had nary a clue as to why.

But that changes when she meets Aidan, a handsome boy who explains to her that she is an Immortal, a being of incredible untapped power who is about to undergo a change that will transform her life completely.

A fantastic premise, to be sure, and I dove right into the story, which caught my attention with its great characters and dialogue. Allie is wonderfully snarky, which I love, and the interplay between Allie and Aidan was the highlight of the book.

The reason I could not give this book five stars was because, in my opinion, there were time when I felt that there was too much dialogue and not enough exposition. There were many flashbacks, and there were many, many characters (too many to keep track of), and there were a couple of times when I found myself a little lost.

This is a fantastic book, and definitely worth reading. My advice: don't get caught up trying to remember all the characters. Just focus on Allie and Aidan and a few other main characters, and you'll be fine.

Can't wait to see what happens to Allie next. Well done, Ms. Craven!

Emerge The Awakening Volume 1 Melissa A Craven 9780990981992 Books Reviews

As an avid reader of most any book with words on the pages for over half a century, it is such a pleasure when I find a book that I literally can not put down. Emerge The Awakening, by Melissa A. Craven, is one such book. On top of that, it is right up there with the most enjoyable books I have had the pleasure of reading.
Melissa was able to take a sci-fi subject, the origin of which is seldom explained by other other authors on the subject, and not only explain it in a logical way but to make the explanation a non-event to just the correct level that the reader accepts the explanation without a second thought allowing the idea to bolster the story line without getting in the way of the story.
Anyone who enjoys a very good action packed book, whether a fan of sci-fi or not, will find much to praise about this first book of Melissa A. Heaven's Emerge Series.
I suppose every teen wants to be unique and extraordinary, but the premise for Emerge pushes special into stretched-beyond-fathomable. I like a good YA paranormal. I'm fine with developing super powers and saving the world, but the intricacies of these superpowers and the intermingling between the special kids' talents is more than I'm comfortable contemplating.

Poor lonely adopted Allie's family moves a lot after mysterious people visit her parents, but as Allie approaches 16, they suddenly move to an island near Cleveland that is somehow "home." She meets extraordinary teens at the island school, and her life becomes unfathomably convoluted as she develops unexpected (by her) unique abilities and unlikely (to all) ties to Aiden (her male counterpart, if not partner) and the other emerging special kids.

For all the build up and development, there's a lot that remains undefined and ambiguous as this introductory volume ends The immortality concept in particular is confusing and nebulously defined. The kids' powers remain intriguing, often unsettling, but still ill-defined – except that, of course, bad guys want them.

In the end, we're left with only hints of what may come in what promises to be an ambitious series. But the potential remains so vague that my 3½☆ doesn't quite bump higher.
I read a fair amount of New Age/College titles and most of them are pretty good. But this one is better than most. So if you need to winnow your reading list more than I do, start with this one. In the hook chapter alone, there were so many quick plot turns they nearly gave me whiplash. And each one resonated with emotional significance enough to cause tectonic shifts in the characters. Making sure the emotions bleed out on the page and keeping the story in sync with the plot when the emotional stakes are this high is no easy feat. Add to that capturing the nuances of teen, coming-of-age drama, and the author I thought brilliantly established her street cred right off the bat for writing late-teen sci-fi action thrillers. As genre fusions go, it’s a particularly tough combination to get right. Making the accomplishment all the more impressive.

The author draws parallels between her own work and The Mortal Instruments. While I didn’t read that book, I did see the movie. And honestly, this book is much better laid out right from the onset. I’m speaking in regards to the plotting and character development.

One caveat there isn’t a page of this book—not a one—that isn’t seething with sexuality and sensuality and boys thinking about girls and/or hitting on girls and vice versa. For fans of the books and the TV franchise Twilight, this is par for the course. Just be aware, for non-teens, it can get to be a bit much.
