Classic book by Elizabeth Enright! I read this book to my niece who is 9 years old. We discussed the differences between "then" and "now" in terms of how things have changed. For example, we were quite shocked that the main character actually accepted a ride from a man in a truck (by herself) which was not that unusual at the time. We also talked about the value of saving for a purchase and how children today do not really understand that concept. There is a lot to both enjoy and learn from this wonderfully-written story. We really liked it!

I love this book! Elizabeth Enright is a wonderful writer
The heroine gets into mischief repeatedly. Luckily, my boys are old enough to know not to imitate her antics. )
Good book. I enjoyed reading it.
I read this out loud to my 8 year old granddaughter and she loved it. She admired the main character for her spunk and search of adventure in everyday life.
Just doesn't get any better than this. It's such a beautiful seemingly simple children's classic, where rain and water become the miraculous things they are. Full of heart. Love this one so much.
You'll feel as though you're living this story, not merely reading it, and the author's love of quirky misfit characters makes this book memorable. It's a perfect summer read.
Elizabeth Enright's books are warm, engaging and even a bit educational or maybe I should say inspiring wanting to learn. I remembered reading "The Saturdays" series when I was a kid and bought them, this book & Gone-Away Lake for a friend's grandchildren. I read them to get a break from current events. I'll need to wait a few years before the grandchildren are old enough to let me know what they think.
